Artist Statement:
Chronosome, literally meaning "time body," is a large floor installation work. It consists of an ambulating funnel hanging from the ceiling that is filled with black ink and periodically drips onto a large paper scroll positioned on the floor. Attached by transparent monofilament to a motorized arm that is wired to a motion sensor, the laboratory funnel moves in circular patterns in response to the viewer's movement as he or she approaches the installation.
Chronosome creates an interactive viewing experience in which the principles of time, motion, and gravity interweave to create a complex and chaotic pattern onto the paper below. To observe the translation of the forces at play into fixed impressions of ink on paper is both meditative and investigative. At first impression the action of the ink dripping is pleasing in its simplicity; the patterns produced appear logical. But upon closer inspection the intricate complexity and irregularity of the pattern is revealed. Within the same action there is both comfort and unpredictability.
