Artist Statement:
Printed on metallic photographic paper, these monochromatic prints seem to present the liquid form as simultaneously ethereal and concrete. Titled Dripstrip and Inkdrip, respectively, these works embody my artistic process of observing natural phenomenon. Inkdrip reflects my methodic approach to observing nature—that need to compare and draw conclusions from visual investigations of natural processes by studying their trace. Upon inspection, each impression can be seen to contain its own unique signature, while on the surface they appear related by family resemblance if not identical. Thus the medium of ink comes to represent the majestic yet confounding character of nature itself—innately unified as a whole, yet dramatically differentiated and complex when observed up close. Filmstrip edges are prominent in Drip Strip, revealing the photographic process that transformed a continuous stream of water into individual droplets in a single long exposure. The utilization of linear strip photography as “special effect” is symbolic of how I employ photography as a tool in making art. It allows me to expand my perception of nature by extending my human capacity to experience its intricate peculiarities.
