Artist Statement:
Titled Embedded Boxes, this series of backlit transparent images shifts the viewer's perspective of time by allowing him or her to see several moments from a sequential event simultaneously. Using the style and subject matter similar to the Book of Acts series, this work suggests that we might be able to experience time differently if it could be synchronized to occur in a single glance or moment. While the almost holographic effect of the imagery is distinct from medical imaging systems currently in use to visualize the body, such as time-based FMRI scans, this work hopefully broaches the subject of how such technologies can change the way we perceive nature and ourselves. Unlike moving media that cannot contain time but must move through it, the stacking of transparent stills has the ability to embed an essence of time.
The particular titles of each box: Skinning Grapes, Casting Seeds, Observing Ants, and Ice Melts all refer back to me, the observer, in an attempt to further elucidate the intimate relationship between the individual and natural phenomena--in this case gravity and time.
